Our Green Journey

An environmentally friendly garden centre

At Barton Grange, we put the environment at the green heart of everything we do.
We are proud of our green policy and are always looking for new and innovative
ways to improve our carbon footprint. Please follow us on our journey.

How we reduce

Our carbon footprint

Borehole water supply

We have a water borehole on site. The extracted water goes through filtration and purifying processes to make it as good as mains drinking water.

Solar power

We have solar panels fitted to our garden centre roof. We have 2560m2 of photovoltaic panels on the garden centre roof generating 300,000 kwh of electricity in an average year.

LED lighting

We have replaced or converted 95% of our filament and fluorescent light fittings to LED technology, reducing our energy consumption by an average of 65%.

Product miles

We always endeavour to use local suppliers in our Farm Shop and dining spots. We are also seeking to locally source other product categories to help reduce delivery miles.

Reclaimed refrigeration system

Heat generated by the refrigeration of our Farm Shop is reclaimed and reused to preheat the hot water in our garden centre and restaurants.

Rainwater harvesting

We have an enormous rainwater harvesting tank under our plant area to collect rainwater from the garden centre roof. The water is then used to water plants and flush toilets.

Geothermal energy

Heat generated by the refrigeration of our Farm Shop is reclaimed and reused to preheat the hot water in our garden centre and restaurants.

How we protect

The habitat

Till point packaging

We’ve made a sustainable decision to replace all till point packaging with paper or reusable alternatives.

Sustainable drainage system

Our car park allows water to slowly percolate through it draining naturally. This avoids burdening the mains drainage system and helps to prevent local flooding.

Bee hives and bug hotels

Look out for our three bee hives located on the grass outside The Riverside Café. They are looked after by Layton Bee Project, a local educational and
environmental project for local schools to learn more about bees.

Protecting peatlands

We stock a wide range of composts including peat-free alternatives. Barton Grange shares the concerns of gardeners and the gardening industry about the effects of global peat extraction on wildlife habitats and the wider environment. Consequently, we fully endorse the research and work being done to find viable alternatives.

Local ingredients suppliers

In both The Riverside Café and Willows Restaurant, we love to create dishes using produce sourced from our local suppliers. Many of our local ingredients suppliers are located within a short distance of our garden centre to reduce product miles and support local businesses in our area.

Farm shop local suppliers

We are proud to support our local producers. Many of our local suppliers are based within 20 miles of our Farm Shop. Like us, they are family-run businesses built on pride, passion and expertise.

How we

Recycle

Single-stream recycling

 We aim to recycle as much waste as possible from stationary to bottles, cans and food waste. We send all our empty ink cartridges to Zero Waste Recycling and these are cleaned and repaired to be reused.

How we recycle plastic

We split our plastic into different types and bale them so they can be easily transported to Preston Plastics. We also have a recycling station for customer to recycle their unwanted plastic pots. This can be found at the main entrance.

Food and green waste composting

The Rocket is used for recycling waste food such as fruit and veg coffee grounds &  bread . We also put our used hand towels through the rocket. As well as reducing food waste, this has also cut down our transportation miles.

Non-recycling materials

We try our best to recycle as much waste as possible but there are some items we have yet to find a solution for. Often they cannot be recycled because of food and chemical contamination. These items are collected by Biffa and used to generate electricity in a process known as ‘energy from waste’.

  • We are CLOSED on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but open as normal on all other Bank Holidays.
