Before your perennials develop into full, showy blooms, make sure you provide enough support for these flowers to truly flourish. If you stake your perennials early enough in Spring, they’ll have enough time to grow over and latch on. Not only will this allow the plants to stand tall, it will also prevent them from collapsing or snapping in strong winds or heavy rain. If you’re wondering which plants to stake, it’s those on tall stems or with large flowers. Now is the perfect time to stake Delphiniums, Rudbeckia, Sunflowers, Dahlias and Peonies, for example. When staking, don’t tie the plants to the support too tightly, as this won’t give the plant enough room to move around the support. Also, make sure the supports are well secured to the ground, so these don’t end up blowing over too!
