Gardening Department Manager | Barton Grange Garden Centre

Reports to: Garden Centre Operations Manager & Group Head of Department
Location: Barton Grange

The Opportunity
Are you a commercially driven retail leader with a passion for horticulture and high-volume retail excellence? Barton Grange is looking for a dynamic Gardening Department Manager to take full ownership of our flagship Gardening Department.

This isn’t just a maintenance role; we are looking for a “business owner” mindset. You will be empowered to drive profitability, optimise stock efficiency, and lead a specialist team to deliver a world-class shopping experience that remains memorable long after the customer leaves.

The Role
As Department Manager, you are the architect of your department’s success. You will blend expert horticultural standards with sharp commercial instincts to ensure Barton Grange remains a premier destination for garden enthusiasts.

Key Performance Areas:
  • Commercial Growth & Profitability: You will live and breathe the numbers. By analysing key metrics, you will proactively drive sales, protect margins, and manage stock turn to maximise every square foot of retail space.
  • Operational Excellence: You will set the gold standard for visual merchandising and departmental presentation. From rigorous stock control to compliance and safety, your department will be “audit-ready” at all times.
  • High-Performance Leadership: You will inspire, coach, and develop a team of specialists. You’ll be responsible for succession planning, performance management, and fostering a culture of pride and accountability.
  • The Customer Journey: You will ensure your team provides expert, confident advice, elevating the customer experience through superior service and product knowledge.
  • The Ideal Candidate
  • Retail Professional: Proven experience in a high-volume retail management role (Garden Centre or high-end retailer preferred).
  • Commercially Astute: Strong understanding of retail KPIs, margin protection, and inventory management.
  • Leadership Presence: An influential communicator who can motivate a diverse team and build strong relationships across the wider business.
  • Adaptable & Resilient: Thrives in a fast-paced, seasonal environment and remains calm under pressure.
  • Horticultural Awareness: While commerciality is key, a foundation of horticultural knowledge is advantageous.

Why Barton Grange?
You will be joining an award-winning business that prides itself on quality and innovation. We offer a platform where your ideas are heard, your hard work is recognised, and your professional development is a priority.
