Barton Grange giraffes get their names

The life sized giraffes at Barton Grange have been named at last!

Their names are ‘Jambo’ and ‘Karibu’ which mean Hello and Welcome in Swahili. The names were suggested by Garstang resident Janet Goodman who entered the giraffe-naming competition organised by the garden centre.

Wildlife enthusiast, Janet had recently been on an African safari and remembers hearing the words Jambo and Karibu being used on arrival at different locations. Lucky Janet received a £50 gift card for her clever idea.

The naming competition attracted over 250 entries which were shortlisted by garden centre staff down to 15 before the final two names were chosen.

Barton Grange MD, Guy Topping, says: “A few African names were suggested and we liked them all but with the giraffes being just inside the main entrance to the garden.
